For several decades, hospitals and healthcare facilities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have relied on manual data management. This long-standing practice reflects a serious lack of technological infrastructure, particularly in rural areas and regions affected by armed conflict. Even in relatively stable urban zones, many health structures struggle to integrate effective digital tools. Financial constraints often hinder this integration. Additionally, there is the issue of inadequate equipment.
In response to this challenge, the organization eGov Africa has developed an innovative and accessible solution: the eGov system. This technology significantly eases the workload of health professionals. It reduces the need for large-scale digital infrastructure to just a mobile phone or tablet. Regardless of location—urban or rural—healthcare workers are now capable of collecting, storing, and using data efficiently. They do this without needing complex office equipment.
A Solution Tailored to Local Realities
The partnership between eGov Africa and local health facilities has enabled:
- Digital collection of data on newborns and survivors of gender-based violence (GBV);
- Automated generation of reliable, real-time statistical reports;
- Secure issuance of birth certificates;
- Tailored alerts for mothers on vaccination schedules, based on the child’s age and the health zone.
All recorded data is stored on secure servers, ensuring protection against both accidental and intentional data loss. eGov system allows institutional and humanitarian partners to access prompt reports on GBV cases. This access enables them to offer appropriate and responsible responses.
Tangible Impact in Hospitals
“Before, we lost a lot of data, especially with the frequent rotation of interns. A single file easily disappeared. Today, thanks to the eGov system, all births are recorded digitally. We can track every child born at Kyeshero Hospital—even ten years later. If a parent returns requesting their child’s information, we can retrieve it in just a few clicks.”
— Dr Fabrice Bishenge, Medical Director, General Referral Hospital of Kyeshero
Saving Time, Ensuring Security, and Preserving Dignity
“Birth registration used to be done manually. But today, everything is electronic. The eGov system is well understood by the community. Women come prepared with the required documents, which makes our work easier. Unlike fragile paper records, digital data is secure. In cases of displacement or armed conflict, certificates stored on a server stay accessible at any time. This accessibility protects the fundamental rights of the child.”
— Yalala Sifa, Deputy Head Nurse, Albert Barthel Referral Health Center
